In 1908 the Daily Mirror newspaper announced a competition to find the most beautiful woman in the world. The panel of judges would include London’s top society and fashion photographer. Meanwhile, in Stockton-on-Tees a jeweller, who was a keen amateur photographer, submitted some pictures he had taken of his lovely daughter, Ivy. She was selected as an entrant and won. One of her prizes was a full set of pictures taken by the famous photographer. There was an extra prize for each when the two of them married. Elwin Neame had a studio in Bond Street and the walls of the Underground stations were adorned with advertisements stating, ‘If it’s a Neame, it’s you at your best.’ Moving pictures were beginning to emerge as a viable business and so the couple embarked on their own productions. And it wasn’t long before Ivy Close became a world star. It was, therefore, completely natural for their son, Ronald, to enter the film industry, soon to become a cinematographer on films such as In Which We Serve. Later a notable producer and director (biography Straight from the Horse’s Mouth - go to www.scarecrowpress.com to order). Equally naturally, his son, Christopher, was destined for the film world. But his father insisted on two things – first he had to start at the bottom and second he must work with cameras. Photography has remained a part of his life ever since.
